Streetscape Development

In 2001, we planted the first new trees along the 1400 block of Michigan Avenue in 50 years, beautifying the once barren street. Streetscape tree plantings need special attention, and so we select species that will thrive in tough city conditions. We’ve also planted streetscape trees using state-of-the-art technology. When we planted new trees on Michigan Avenue, we used CU-Structural Soil, which supports pavement, yet allows tree roots to penetrate it freely. Structural soil meets the load-bearing requirement for structurally sound pavement installation while encouraging deep root growth away from the pavement surface. The structural soil arrangement can greatly enhance both tree vigor and life expectancy. As downtown Detroit continues to reshape itself, The Greening will look for additional opportunities to implement major streetscape improvement projects in partnership with the City of Detroit, Wayne County and Michigan Department of Transportation.
