Education > Workshops, Resources and Services

The Greening provides workshops, tools, and resources aimed at building the capacity of others to revitalize the environment in their own community. Technical Assistance offerings are offered to organizations within and outside Detroit to strengthen environmental activism on a regional basis. Hundreds of thousands of people are impacted and provided with training and support in topics ranging from open space planning, to urban agriculture, to community planting projects and neighborhood nursery programs.

Urban Roots

The Urban Roots program, trains urban farmers on the latest urban agriculture practices and provides them with the resources and tools to establish community gardens in their own neighborhood.

Annual Spring Tree Sale

The Greening's Annual Spring Tree Sale at the Eastern Market provides the opportunity to purchase trees and shrubs at discounted prices. Many people do not have the financial resources to purchase plant stock at a nursery. The Greening purchases trees and shrubs from the nursery in bulk and passes the savings on to the residents. Our goal is to encourage others to beautify their own landscapes.

Consulting Services

Our Consulting Services Program allows constituents to talk to talk to any of our staff regarding a variety of topics requiring a high level of expertise. For instance through "Ask the Forester" our Urban Forester has provided individuals with priceless information regarding anything from tree health to appropriate plant species.

Tool Banks

The Greening houses one of the largest Tool Banks in the city. Community groups are invited to borrow tools, including shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, trowels, tillers, pick axes, buckets, and hoes to complete their own planting projects. In addition, The Greening helps to maintain several satellite tool banks throughout the city through its partnership in the Garden Resource Program Collaborative.
