THE GREENING OF DETROIT'S 20TH ANNIVERARY CELEBRATION
From September 2009-10, The Greening of Detroit will celebrate its 20th year of growing Detroit. Throughout the year community partners, key leaders, farmers, tree enthusiasts, environmentalists and foodies from throughout the nation will celebrate Detroit’s innovative work focused on building a greener, healthier and more sustainable city. A committee of over 25 individuals, chaired by Sheila O’Hara, has been working hard to create an entire year of celebratory planting events and projects, anchored by an opening Gala and closing party.

The anniversary will begin on September 17, 2009 with our Greening of Detroit 20th Anniversary Gala. Iron Chef, Michael Symon, owner of Detroit’s Roast Restaurant at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel has graciously opened his doors to host this exclusive, party to benefit The Greening of Detroit. Chef Symon has invited world- renowned celebrity chefs to prepare a rare feast, featuring locally grown and raised food and recipes that will showcase the amazing talents of these culinary artists. Never before have these chefs come together to prepare a feast that focuses on the promotion of locally grown food, providing our guests with a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience unique dishes prepared by some of the world’s finest chefs. Celebrity chefs include: Michael Symon, Traci Des Jardins, Mary Sue Milliken, Marc Vetri and
Takashi Yagihashi. Entertainment provided by Royal Garden Trio.

“The anniversary will give us a unique opportunity to showcase monthly events that highlight all The Greening’s work citywide, including major planting events like the reforestation of Jefferson Avenue from Alter Road all the way downtown; to education symposiums focusing on placed based education practices; and the opening of The Greening’s new Market Garden at the Eastern Market and our Meyer’s Nursery in Rouge Park,” states Rebecca Salminen Witt, The Greening of Detroit’s President.
“We are thinking big, to make a big difference for The Greening. Our goal is to raise nearly $400,000 as part of the 20th Anniversary celebration to launch the next 20 years of The Greening’s growing.”

The celebration will end in September 2010 with The Greening's closing event at The Eastern Market. This event will bring together twenty-four of Detroit’s finest chefs to showcase their talents, while promoting the use of local foods. Chefs will entertain guests with demonstrations, preparing locally grown food in unique recipes and engaging the audience to expand their own culinary talents. In addition chefs will be preparing samples onsite and creating dishes that feature local food products that can be found within 100 miles of the Eastern Market. Throughout the day, guests will be entertained by a host of bands and performances showcasing the rich local talent that makes Detroit’s performing art scene one of the best in the country.
