The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees,  providing job training and involving our youth in the education of the natural environment. We involve Detroiters in the process through community engagement, green spaces, education and jobs.

Our Impact

147,000+

Trees Planted

Since 1989 we have planted over 147,000 trees in the City of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park. We continue to plant along city and residential streets and within parks and playgrounds.

Years providing adult workforce development training

Since 2010 we have provided landscape and tree artisan certification classes to Detroiters with barriers to employment. Trainees receive hands on training in the field along with job readiness skills, financial literacy, CPR, and MiOSHA.

Green Corps is in its 25th year!

Green Infrastructure

Our Green Infrastructure Department focuses on Community Forestry, Stormwater Management projects, Landscaping Services and administering tree nursery operations at Walter Meyers Nursery.

Get Involved

 

Sign Up to be a Citizen Forester

Our Citizen Forester program trains volunteers to help us manage large volunteer groups and provide hands on instructions for planting trees

Volunteer opportunities

There are many ways to get involved at the Greening. We do large tree planting events, where 100 or more volunteers are needed during the spring and fall.
