One of the biggest challenges facing the workforce right now isn't lack of jobs; it's the lack of necessary skills to fill the jobs now available in Detroit. A primary focus for The Greening of Detroit is to bridge the gap between employers and potential employees, addressing the issues of skills training and talent building.
Meet Reina Hamilton. A single mom, Reina came to The Greening with some life challenges that had limited her ability to find and keep employment that was sufficient to support her family. Reina wanted a change, and she quickly caught on to the skills taught at The Greening's tree artisan training program. Reina learned tree identification, tree removal and how to use equipment necessary to gain employment. Just as important to Reina were the financial training and job coaching she received - all of which promote successful transition into long-term economic sustainability.
Upon graduation from our program, Reina began and completed an advanced training program in tree trimming by Local 17 IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) as part of a partnership with DTE Energy. She is the first African American woman to successfully complete the IBEW Boot Camp, and is currently employed with Davey Tree. She broke all barriers and has used this training program as an opportunity to make a monumental change in her life. We are proud of Reina!
You can help us continue to serve Detroiters like Reina by supporting us in our journey by making a gift to The Greening on Giving Tuesday.
