Citizen Forester Internship
The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees, providing job training and involving our youth in the education of the natural environment. We involve Detroiters in the process through community engagement, green spaces, education and jobs.
Internship Details:
The internship will extend from March 15th – June 15th. The ideal candidate will be available 15 hr/wk and available to work all Thursday and Saturday mornings during the aforementioned time period. An internship stipend is available upon project completion in the range of $2,000-$3,000.
Who We Are Looking For:
Individuals from Detroit who have an interest in Forestry, Environmental Studies, Volunteer Management, Communications or Community Organizing. Interns who find the most success are typically motivated self-starters with a passion for guiding and inspiring environmental stewardship in others and have an interest in working with natural resources in an urban setting.
Project Description:
The Citizen Forester program was developed in response to the organization’s need to manage the large number of volunteers that come out to participate in the Greening of Detroit’s weekend tree plantings.
As a Citizen Forester, many skills are utilized during tree plantings. A working knowledge of tree identification and maintenance techniques are often necessary as well as volunteer management and community engagement techniques as Citizen Foresters are intricately involved in planting trees, overseeing volunteers and communicating with neighborhood residents.
Position Description:
The Citizen Forester Intern will assist the Green Infrastructure staff with the recruitment, training, implementation and reporting that is associated with the Citizen Forester program during the planting season. The Citizen Forester Intern will be expected to:
Complete an 8 hour training and become a Citizen Forester
Conduct outreach activities to recruit Citizen Foresters from Detroit and the Metro Detroit area to ensure growth of the program
Aid in the assistance of all orientation workshops and supplemental workshops associated with the program
Participate in social media activities to keep participants engaged in current events
Participate in all Thursday and Saturday plantings throughout designated planting season
Work with Green Infrastructure staff to envision and create new opportunities for growth of program
Participate in planning and implementation of end of season celebration honoring all participants in program
