COMPENSATION: $17/hour, Part time, Seasonal –Hourly, Nonexempt

POSITION: Environmental Education Intern

REPORTS TO: Environmental Education Manager

SUMMARY:

The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees, providing job training and involving youth in the education of the natural environment. The organization is currently seeking (1) Environmental Education Intern committed to the mission of involving youth in the environmental stewardship of their outdoor spaces.

The Environmental Education Intern is a temporary, part-time position responsible for implementing outdoor education programming at various recreation centers and summer camps throughout Detroit. The internship term will extend from Monday, June 15th to Friday, August 14th at 25 hours/week.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Implement fun and creative science-based lessons in an outdoor setting

● Engage youth and the public in developing environmental awareness

● Supervise students during programming events

● Evaluate existing programming and take part in strategic brainstorming sessions to innovate future programming

● Organize and maintain program materials on a daily and weekly basis

● Communicate with community groups, teachers and Greening Staff in a positive and professional manner

● Thrive in a collaborative and positive work environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Ideally, Environmental Education Interns will be motivated, future teachers looking for a chance to gain hands-on experience with curriculum development and implementation in an outdoor setting. Applicants must be committed to environmental stewardship and providing a positive program experience for children and adults. These positions require a positive attitude, excellent communication skills and a love of youth and the outdoors. The interns will be responsible for implementing Recreation Center and Library programming and assisting the Environmental Education Coordinator with a variety of activities related to programming.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Candidates must display professionalism, positive attitude, independent judgment and decision-making ability, self-motivation, capacity to follow verbal and written direction, and a team mentality. We are seeking a demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a genuine appreciation for youth and the urban environment. Previous work with youth and community groups is desirable.
