Status: Full-Time, Seasonal Hourly Wage: $19.00/hour (April 2026 – August 2026)

The Greening of Detroit is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working with residents, block clubs, community development corporations, schools, faith-based organizations and businesses to grow A Greener Detroit through planting and educational programs, workforce development, environmental leadership, advocacy and by building community capacity. Since 1989, we have worked to reforest the City of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park by planting over 166,000 trees while working closely with the City of Detroit and in 2024 we celebrated our thirty-fifth year of community service.

Position Description:

The Youth Employment Coordinator reports to the Director of Workforce Development. This position is responsible for the continued development of The Greening’s well-established youth employment program as it is expanded in connection with a national partnership opportunity. The Coordinator will develop and implement policies and procedures for youth employment activities in collaboration with the Director of Workforce Development. The Coordinator will also assist with drafting program and proposal budgets as well as program and grant reports.

Essential Position Responsibilities:

Build and maintain partnerships with middle/high schools, universities, businesses and community youth programs to strengthen Green Corps recruitment and program impact.

Serve as a key communication liaison with families and school personnel regarding prospective and current youth participants, as directed by the Workforce Program Manager or Workforce Director.

Coordinate program operations and administration including paperwork collection/archiving, weekly project lists and timelines with consistent review of the summer program calendar.

Lead day-of logistics for planned events and activities, ensuring smooth execution and clear coordination across staff and partners.

Support youth engagement and accountability by coordinating daily/weekly activities with youth leaders, tracking participation and conducting worksite visits while participating in outdoor programming as needed.

Assist with hiring, recruitment and supervision of youth employees in partnership with the Workforce Program Manager and the Workforce Director.

Provide ongoing reporting and program improvement support including meeting operational goals, maintaining an evaluation protocol and keeping leadership informed of relevant program insights and needs. This also includes documenting staff progress and disciplinary referrals.

Represent The Greening of Detroit publicly by attending and presenting at community, city and state events/conferences to promote the organization and its mission.

Contribute to broader departmental and organizational support, assisting leadership with planning, management, communication, and other duties as assigned to advance The Greening of Detroit’s mission.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Community Development, or a related field.

Experience administering or supporting youth development programs.

Coursework or continuing education in youth development, education, social services or related areas.

Strong ability to work with diverse youth populations, community stakeholders and the general public.

Demonstrated professionalism that includes sound judgment and decision-making skills.

Be a self-directed, motivated, and collaborative team player.

Interest in environmental stewardship and appreciation for urban green spaces.

This is a seasonal-hourly position that does not offer health insurance benefits. However, The Greening of Detroit offers paid holidays and bereavement days. Plus paid, accrued sick days based on date of hire and hours worked.
