The Greening of Detroit is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working with residents, block clubs, community development corporations, schools, faith-based organizations and businesses to grow A Greener Detroit through planting and educational programs, workforce development, environmental leadership, advocacy and by building community capacity. Since 1989, we have worked to reforest the City of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park by planting over 177,000 trees while working closely with the City of Detroit and in 2024 we celebrated our thirty-fifth year of community service.
Position Description:
The Human Resources Director is responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day administration, compliance, and coordination of the Human Resources function in alignment with organizational policies and leadership direction. This is a hands-on HR leadership role focused on compliance, employee relations, and HR operations within a decentralized supervision model.
Within The Greening of Detroit’s organizational structure, Program Directors are responsible for direct staff supervision and annual performance evaluations within their departments. The Human Resources Director provides policy guidance, compliance oversight, and consultation to ensure consistency, fairness, and adherence to organizational standards. The Vice President and Human Resources Director serve as final decision-makers in escalated personnel matters.
This role supports a workforce of approximately 45 full-time employees and 75 seasonal staff and plays a key role in maintaining legal compliance, supporting leadership, and fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
Essential Position Responsibilities:
Compliance & HR Administration
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws, including wage and hour regulations, employee classification, and required postings.
• Develop, maintain, and update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook to ensure legal compliance and organizational clarity.
• Maintain accurate, secure, and compliant employee records and HR documentation.
Employee Relations & Advisory Support
Manage employee relations matters, including investigations, documentation, and resolution of workplace issues.
Provide guidance to Program Directors on employee relations, policy interpretation, and corrective action processes.
Partner with the Vice President on escalated personnel matters and final determinations when needed.
Recruitment, Onboarding & Workforce Support
Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and offboarding processes for full-time and seasonal staff.
Ensure consistent and equitable hiring practices across departments.
Support seasonal workforce planning, onboarding, and transitions in coordination with program leadership.
Culture & Organizational Support
Support the development of a respectful, inclusive, and accountable workplace culture grounded in organizational values.
Assist leadership in implementing staff engagement and retention practices.
Provide HR-related training and guidance to supervisors and staff as needed.
HR Systems & Operations
Administer employee benefits, assist with payroll coordination, and support open enrollment processes.
Maintain HR systems and reporting functions to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Identify HR risks and recommend practical solutions to leadership.
Attends meetings as required or requested.
Completes other duties and projects as assigned to support The Greening of Detroit’s mission and organizational effectiveness.
Experience with ADP Workforce Now or a comparable payroll system.
Required Qualifications for Successful Position Performance:

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
5–7 years of progressive HR experience required, including employee relations and HR compliance.
Nonprofit experience and/or experience supporting seasonal workforce strongly preferred.
HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR, or equivalent) preferred but not required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
