The Greening of Detroit is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working with residents, block clubs, community development corporations, schools, faith-based organizations and businesses to grow A Greener Detroit through planting and educational programs, workforce development, environmental leadership, advocacy and by building community capacity. Since 1989, we have worked to reforest the City of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park by planting over 166,000 trees while working closely with the City of Detroit and in 2024 we celebrated our thirty-fifth year of community service.

Our Workforce Development Department includes the Green Corps Summer Youth Employment Program, which provides over 80 Detroit youth with paid employment, environmental education, life skills training and hands-on green job experiences each summer.

Position Description:

The Green Corps Program Manager is responsible for the planning, execution and oversight of all aspects of The Greening of Detroit’s Green Corps Summer Youth Employment Program. This role provides day-to-day program leadership to ensure seasonal staff and youth crews are supported, operations run smoothly and program goals are achieved in alignment with organizational and funder expectations.

The Program Manager reports to the Director of Workforce Development and works collaboratively with internal teams, city partners, seasonal staff and youth participants to deliver an engaging, safe and high-quality summer program.

This position is based at The Greening of Detroit headquarters with frequent fieldwork at planting sites, youth program locations and community partner sites. The Program Manager must be comfortable working outdoors during the summer season, at times during inclement weather and traveling occasionally throughout the Detroit Metro area.

Essential Position Responsibilities:

Program Oversight:

• Design and manage the Green Corps summer program calendar, this includes training, daily operations, site assignments and workshops.

• Recruit, onboard and supervise seasonal staff including Crew Leaders and support personnel.

• Ensure program compliance with organizational policies, labor laws and funder expectations.

• Coordinate logistics for youth orientation, field trips, partner visits and program closeout activities.

Youth Support & Development:

• Maintain a supportive, structured and empowering environment for ALL youth participants.

• Coordinate life skills and workforce readiness workshops (e.g., financial literacy, environmental education, team building and goal setting).

• Address youth challenges through supportive services or referrals and facilitate conflict resolution as needed.

Community & Partner Engagement:

• Build and manage relationships with community partners, schools, funders and government agencies.

• Collaborate with external facilitators and stakeholders to enhance youth learning experiences and job pathways.

• Represent The Greening of Detroit and the Green Corps program at community events and public presentations.

Monitoring & Evaluation:

• Track and report on key program metrics including attendance, progress, incidents and outcomes.

• Document and maintain accurate and confidential information for all youth participants.

• Assist with program evaluation and use feedback to improve future sessions.

• Attends meetings as required or requested.

• Completes other duties and projects as assigned, directed, or as requested to facilitate The Greening of Detroit’s mission and organizational presence.

Required Qualifications for Successful Position Performance:

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Youth Development, Environmental Studies, Public Administration or a related field (or equivalent of professional experience). Plus, demonstrate leadership experience in one or more of the following areas: community organizing, urban planning, workforce management or environmental programming.

• 3–5 years of experience managing youth or workforce programs, ideally with multicultural or underserved populations. Exhibit strong supervisory skills, especially with seasonal teams and youth.

• Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve shared project goals in a fast-paced environment. Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills and able to manage priorities with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment.

• Exhibit a professional demeanor with the ability to exercise independent judgment and maintain appropriate discretion.
